Announcing details of the upcoming (Dec. 4) Bancroft Institute workshop: What the papers say: Research and reporting on workers’ compensation in the precarious economy.

The half-day session (1:00 – 4:30 p.m.) will feature Sara Mojtehedzadeh (Toronto Star), Katherine Lippel (University of Ottawa), and Ellen MacEachen (University of Waterloo), together with injured workers and advocates with lived experience.

This promises to be a very popular event so register now for the workshop to be held Monday Dec. 4th at Toronto City Hall, Committee Rm #4, 100 Queen St West.

Sara Mojtehedzadeh reports on the changing workplace, including precarious work, labour issues, and workers’ compensation. Previously, she worked for the BBC World Service. Her work at the Star has been recognized by the Hillman Foundation prize for social-justice oriented investigative journalism. She received the JHR/Canadian Association of Journalists Award for human rights reporting in 2017.

Katherine Lippel and Ellen MacEachen report on an ongoing study looking at precarious employment and return to work challenges in Québec and Ontario this two part presentation will look at legal and policy issues underpinning return to work programs after work injury and the application of those policies to low wage earners and other precariously employed workers. The first part of the presentation will explain the design of the studies, and then describe the legal frameworks governing workers’ compensation that determine the return to work experiences of workers injured while in precarious employment. It is based on analysis of legislation and policy and key informant interviews in Ontario and Québec. The second part of the presentation will share preliminary findings of the Ontario study based on interviews with workers and employers in that province.

Ellen MacEachen, PhD, is an associate professor and associate director with the School of Public Health and Health Systems at the University of Waterloo. Katherine Lippel, LLL, LLM, FRSC, is a professor of law at the Faculty of Law (Civil Law Section) at the University of Ottawa and holds the Canada Research Chair in Occupational Health and Safety Law. She is the recent recipient of a SSHRC Impact Award Gold Medal.
